Russian animation wins in CINANIMA’s 40 anniversary

Russian animation wins again in CINANIMA – International Film Festival of Animation of Espinho. “Among the Black Waves,” a story based on the old Northern legend in which the souls of drowned people turn into seals, gave the 40th Edition Grand Prize of the Festival to Anna Budanova.

In Portuguese, José Miguel Ribeiro sees his Short film “Fragments” to collect the Special Jury Award. “This is a film about how the War sets in the body of the people who live the eyes in the eyes. And then, thousands of miles away, tens of years passed, it contaminates other human beings like a virus”.

José Miguel Ribeiro also takes António Gaio Award, with “Fragments” to be considered the best film in the national competition on the 40th anniversary of CINANIMA. “End of Line”, by Paulo D’Alva and António Pinto, deserved an Honorable Mention.

Festival’s audience chose French short film “La Table”, about a carpenter with a perfectionist trait who lives obsessed with the idea of creating the perfect object, like the film of its choice, and its director, Eugène Boitsov, takes home, too, Alves Costa Award for the best film up to five minutes. In this category, the Jury also awarded an Honorable Mention to “The Street of Anfok”, by Zilai Feng (United States).

Winning Feature film, “Psiconautas, The Forgotten Children”, by Alberto Vázquez and Pedro Rivero, came from Spain and tells the story of Birdboy and Dinky, two teenagers who decide to flee an island devastated by an ecological catastrophe.

Young Portuguese Film Award has recognized, in the category up to 18 years, the Short Film made by the Collective of Students of the Secondary School of Lousada, “A Portuguese Family, with Doubt”; and awarded an Honorable Mention to “We and the World” by Children of Anilupa Workshops, Students of Centro de Reabilitação da Granja.

In the category of more than 18 years, the young award-winning directors were Joana Nogueira and Patrícia Rodrigues, with the Short film “That’s how it was”, the life story of six old people, four women and a couple who give voice to objects, a production that also won the category in debut in CINANIMA for the Best Documentary of Animation.

An Honorable Mention, also, to “A Place in Nowhere”, by Bárbara Oliveira and João Rodrigues in the Young Portuguese Director Award, more than 18 years.

Among the films of more than 5 up to 24 minutes, the Canadian Short film of Theodore Ushev, “Blind Vaysha” was the winner. CINANIMA also distinguishes the best Graduation / School film with the Gaston Roch Award. This year, the distinction went to Giulia Martinelli and “Merlot” (Italy), passed in a fairytale forest, where a grumpy old woman loses a bottle of wine.

Finally, from The Netherlands, “De Staat: Witch Doctor”, by Studio Smack and Floris Kaayk, wins Best Comissioned Film Comercials and Information; and CINANIMA Organization distinguishes, in the Animated Mermaid category, the Danish Short film “Mr.Sand” by Soetkin Verstegen.
