PUPPETS – The Collection of Teatro e Marionetas de Mandrágora

“Our intention was to identify and share what defines our collection, presenting a selection of pieces that form part of it. From among the hundreds of figures, puppets, objects and props, 83 pieces were chosen which, in summary, represent the creations produced between 2002 and 2024 — key works of Teatro e Marionetas de Mandrágora, encompassing a variety of techniques, materials, scales, and the creative minds behind them”.

About Teatro e Marionetas de Mandrágora

Teatro e Marionetas de Mandrágora is a professional puppet theatre company founded on 2 April 2002. Through a symbiosis of symbolic language that intertwines heritage and traditional legacy with the thought and dynamics of contemporary society — in a dialogue that is not always peaceful — a fundamental element emerges: the puppet.

“O Crepitar da Terracota” vol. I e II by Inês Rebanda Coelho

O Crepitar da Terracota is a Fantasy and Sci-Fi trilogy that merges literature, digital art, and animation. Set in a dystopian future of hardship and deprivation, it weaves together diverse cultures, genders, and beliefs, highlighting the urgency of empathy, compassion, and humanity’s reconnection with nature and spirituality.

The first volume, Fire, brought the story to life with digital illustrations and an award-winning animated book teaser created in collaboration with Portuguese studios. Breath, the second volume, expanded this vision with in-chapter animations by the author, traditional careto costume design, and a soundtrack featuring acclaimed musicians.
The forthcoming third volume seeks to deepen these artistic collaborations, especially in animation, unlocking the full potential of this extraordinary story.

Tale about the Cat and the Moon, by Pedro Serrazina

This special edition celebrates the 30th anniversary of The Story of the Cat and the Moon, an award-winning short film that premiered at Cinanima ’95, winning the awards for Best First Film and Young Portuguese Filmmaker, and was later selected for its international premiere and competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 1996. Having subsequently received numerous other awards and distinctions, it is still screened in retrospectives worldwide and is part of the Portuguese National Film Plan.

Now adapted into book format from Pedro Serrazina’s beautiful poem-text, voiced in the 1995 film by Joaquim de Almeida, this narrative portrays the passionate obsession of a cat who relentlessly pursues the shining spectre of his beloved Moon and, for her, faces countless challenges and storms, in a black-and-white work featuring a subtle and delicate play of light and shadow.

The “story of the story” – with a text by José-Manuel Xavier, a filmmaker with a long career in animation, and another by the author himself, in which he returns to the origins of his Cat and the making of this short – concludes this book. Additionally, the book includes a reproduction of the original film poster, as well as two interpretive illustrations of the Cat and the Moon by illustrator Alex Gozblau and director Regina Pessoa.
