Mochila Cultural Digital PNA - Citizen Tourist

Guest Author : Gustavo Carreiro

“Citizen Tourist” is a film that portrays a current multi-theme: overtourism, hyper-consumerism, the “Instagrammable” – how social media triggers negative feelings and comparisons between people, such as envy or even greed. In addition, it addresses the hyper-speed of social experiences vs. slow living, the appreciation of the territory, nature and even a more spiritual sense of life.

“My place has Espinho"
Workshop, image and movement

ANIMA VAM

The Anima VAM initiative is associated with the 49th edition of the CINANIMA Festival, proposing new links for community experimentation in the city of Espinho, with the aim of discussing and highlighting the sense of belonging in the neighbourhoods of Pescadores, Ponte D’Anta and Paramos. Children, young people and seniors experiment with animation techniques, using stop motion, pixilation, rotoscoping and analogue cut-outs, to reflect on where they live, what they experience and how they are perceived.

The experimental workshops stimulate new skills and critical awareness, alongside an increase in film literacy, in a community context, and culminate in travelling screenings and debates in each of the participating neighbourhoods, curated by Anima VAM. The aim is to give a voice to communities, to dialogue and to the deconstruction of perceptions, challenging stereotypes, strengthening ties, while bringing the festival audience closer to practices of cultural inclusion, ultimately finding their place – Espinho.

Anilupa Workshops - The Optical Toy Fair

This is an interactive, playful and educational exhibition focused on the early days of cinema and inspired by the idea of a fair, whose dynamics reflect some of the interventions
developed by Anilupa in workshops on the construction of optical toys.

In this exhibition, visitors can explore replicas of optical devices from the late 19th century, which reveal the principles of image movement in cyclical actions, as well as other devices that recreate visual phenomena and optical illusions. In addition to pieces from its heritage and objects created especially for this exhibition.

The initiative also includes artistic objects created in collaboration with social and educational institutions in Espinho, Granja, and Porto.

Steve Woods

Drawing the Line in Ireland

The history of animation in Ireland is unique. In this masterclass, Steve Woods will explain how Ireland went from being a very small industry to becoming a leading country in the production of high-quality, world-class animation.

The importance of state funding, education and the strong involvement of three American animation studios, which migrated to Dublin in the mid-1980s, contributed to this success story.

Illustrated with artwork and clips from classic Irish animations, the lecture will conclude, however, that the real reason Irish animators have created such a wonderful animation industry is because they simply love animation.

The Ecological Dimensions of Animated Cinema: From Phidias to McLaren

This presentation explores the ecological dimensions of animated cinema through the works of Norman McLaren and Phidias. McLaren’s emphasis on “what happens between the images” resonates with ecological thinking centred on interdependence.

Similarly, the frieze of Phidias’ Parthenon intertwines figures in a way reminiscent of keyframes, reflecting a holistic view of the world—rather than an anthropocentric one—that aligns with contemporary ecological thinking.

Kajsa Naess

What happens when we turn actual events into fiction?

What happens when we turn actual events into fiction?

Kajsa fell in love with the strange story of Titina, a mysterious polar traveller in an airship, and decided to use her as the main character and heroine of her story. By mixing real documentary images with animation, her goal was to tell a story about small feelings in a grand and empty landscape.

Titina is based on a true story, or as he likes to say, an “almost true story”. It is not always easy to decide. Is it possible to treat history fairly in animation? Is it the director’s goal or privilege to make his own interpretation?

Bailado Pictórico

Curated by Coletivo Salitre

The performance starts with two canvases and painting materials from Viarco — materials that enable a constant fluidity of shapes and colours. This will be the theme for a rhythmic symbiosis between painting and sound. The performance will feature two painters, Rita Paupério and Gustavo Sanches, who will start painting simultaneously and will swap canvases when a sound signal is emitted. The pictorial creation will be guided by live sound design by Ricardo Salazar and José Lobo alongside the canvases, in a spontaneous dialogue between sound and gesture. The continuous movement will introduce an unpredictable dance, where the outcome will remain open. The performance Bailado Pictórico is the result of a partnership between Coletivo Salitre + Cinanima + Viarco.
