Cinema owes its existence to processes of discovery of moving images. These processes are visible in a series of optical devices invented in the late 19th century, which make it possible to observe and perceive the principles of image movement in cyclical actions, or others that refer us to a diversity of phenomena and optical illusions.
This initiative aimed to create an interactive, playful and educational exhibition focused on the early days of cinema and inspired by the idea of a fair. The dynamic was similar to interventions carried out by Anilupa in workshops on building optical toys with children and young people, which culminated in presentations in their communities. Participants were also involved in the preparation, creation of decorative elements and promotion of these events, recreating a popular fair atmosphere.
In addition to a series of objects belonging to Anilupa’s heritage and others that were built specifically for this exhibition, this initiative also sought to involve social and educational institutions in Espinho, V. N. de Gaia and Porto in the creation of decorative elements and artistic objects, which contributed to the assembly of the entire scenic device inspired by popular fairs.
In the year that Associação de Ludotecas do Porto, the institution to which Anilupa belongs, celebrates the centenary of the birth of its founder, paediatrician Virgílio Moreira, this exhibition recalls his vision: ‘You learn by doing and you do by playing’. It is in this spirit that we open the doors to this exhibition and invite children and adults to discover the pleasure of learning through play and curiosity.
Anilupa, which has been in existence for 35 years, is an animation film studio created by Associação de Ludotecas do Porto, with the aim of involving groups of non-professional directors, such as children, young people, and adults, in the entire process of making films using animated image techniques. It currently has more than 250 films produced in its regular animation film workshops with audiences from educational, social and cultural institutions; it has received over 100 awards at various national and international film festivals; and it has a film library, the Anilupa Digital Film Library, which includes a large part of its film heritage organised by category, theme and subject area. This film library is free to access and is aimed at all types of institutions.
At the same time, it runs workshops on building optical toys and other devices linked to the history of cinema, enabling participants to understand the wonders behind moving images and a variety of optical illusions. It organises and promotes events such as film screenings and exhibitions, training activities and other initiatives in partnership with educational, social and cultural agents, which have been developed, in most cases, in the northern region of the country.
