The aim of the ‘ANILUPA WORKSHOPS – Art and Cinema at School’ exhibition is to show the backstage of artistic animation film workshops in a school context, showing the various techniques that can be used to create all kinds of elements for the films, the countless possibilities of materials that can be used, as well as their application in the various areas linked to plastic expression. The aim is not only to sensibilise school audiences to this type of creation, but also to show examples of how other audiences can be involved, regardless of their age or institutional background.
Anilupa is an animation film studio created by the Associação de Ludotecas do Porto with the aim to provide opportunities for groups of non-professional filmmakers, such as children, young people, or adults to get involved in the process of making animated films.
Throughout its history, Anilupa has guided the production of over 250 films as part of its regular animation workshops with participants from educational, social, and cultural institutions. Winner of more than 90 awards at various national and international film festivals. Anilupa also hosts an online film library, the Anilupa Digital Cinematheque, which includes a significant portion of its film heritage organized by categories, themes and disciplinary areas, providing free access to all types of organizations.
With 34 years of existence, Anilupa is a space for continuous research, artistic experimentation, and the inclusion of diverse audiences. It is yet another contribution to animation in Portugal.
Anilupa´s animation workshops, carried out since its establishment, aim to provide the opportunity to students from various public, private, vocational, artistic, and special education schools to create their own animated films, working collectively in an educational environment. These films reflect their thoughts, their poetics, their freedom of expression, their perspectives on the world, their identity, and other themes that resonate with them, using a variety of art forms such as writing, painting, drawing, ceramics, sand art, music, and performance.
This exhibition offers a glimpse into some of the artworks created by students from different schools, which were used in the making of their animated films. In certain cases, as a result of the collaborations with social organizations, the workshops also involved adult participants, who played an active role in the film-making process. In other cases, the films resulted from collaborations with cultural institutions, for instance those created from content researched in national museums and those produced especially for artistic events, such as cine-concerts at Casa da Música in Porto.
The exhibition also aims to highlight the different techniques that can be employed in animation, the wide range of materials available, and how these can be applied in various forms of art creation within the cinematic language of animation.
