International Short Film Competition

Bruno Simões

Bruno Simões is a Portuguese director who graduated in Graphic Design and Multimedia from ETIC and ESAD.CR, and specialised in animation with a master's degree from Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona. Bruno began his professional career in Lisbon in the field of advertising. In 2006 he moved to London to join the animation team at MPC (Moving Picture Company), where he was part of the creative teams of films such as “Prometheus”, “Skyfall”, “World War Z” and the last four films in the “Harry Potter” saga.

In 2011 Bruno moved to New York to join the animation studio Blue Sky Studios, participating in the films “Epic”, “Rio 2”, “The Peanuts Movie” and “Ice Age 5”. In 2016 Bruno returned to Europe to found the animation studio Studio Kimchi, where he works as a director. Bruno directed and produced dozens of auteur and commissioned films, selected and awarded at film festivals around the world.

In 2022 Bruno received the Sophia Award for Best Animated Short Film for his film “The Doctor's Wife”, his following short film, “Kafka's Doll”, played at more than 120 festivals around the world, and his film “Pip” is currently the most viewed animated short film ever on YouTube.

Joanna Quinn

Joanna discovered animation at Middlesex University London while studying for a BA degree in Graphic Design. Her graduation film “Girls Night Out”, a brilliantly simple and humorous riposte to machismo and a celebration of uninhibited female sexuality, introduced audiences to the character of Beryl and kick-started Joanna’s animation career by winning 3 major awards at the Annecy International Animation Festival in 1987.

The uniquely memorable character of Beryl became the focus for two more films “Body Beautiful” and “Dreams & Desires - Family Ties” and the politics of gender and oppression together with Joanna’s obsessive fascination and delight with exploring the eccentricities of the human body became the central themes of her work.

In 2022 the most recent Beryl film “Affairs of the Art” earned Les and Joanna an Oscar nomination. Joanna’s films have won numerous international awards, including 4 Baftas, 3 Emmys and 3 Oscar nominations. Joanna is a committed educator and has received an Honorary Doctorate from 3 UK universities and is an Honorary Fellow at the Royal College of Art, London.

Juan Carlos Concha

Artist, director and producer. He has been working in film since 1992. He has taken workshops with teachers such as Patricio Guzmán, José L. Guerin and Bigas Luna, among others. He teaches at animation schools in Barcelona and Bogotá.

He has participated in European feature films such as “Mia et le Migou” by Folimage, “The Illusionist” by Silvain Chomet, “Chico y Rita” by Trueba – Mariscal.

He created APEMANSTUDIO to produce his own projects such as the short film “A la Derive”. He is Director of NONSTOP BARCELONA ANIMACIÓ, International Animation Film Festival and the Concept Art Seminar.

He directed the series “Four and a Half Friends, a co-production of ZDF (Germany), EDEBE and TV3 of Catalonia, produced by B-WaterStudios. Assistant director and associate producer for the film “Josep” by Les Films D'Ici, Cannes 2020 Official Selection, Best Animated Film EFA and Cesar for Best Animated Film 2021. Technical Director and Associate Producer for the film by Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal, “They Shot the Piano Player”.

Marta Pajek

Marta Pajek is an award-winning Polish animation filmmaker. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, she studied at the Animated Film Studio headed by legendary animator Jerzy Kucia. Pajek later trained under the mentorship of Estonian animator Priit Pärn at the Turku Arts Academy in Finland.

Pajek’s filmmaking style has been shaped by an interest in the arts and graphic design, as well as dance, psychology, spirituality and human experiences. She has directed several animated shorts, including After Apples” (2004), “Nextdoor” (2005) and the award-winning Sleepincord(2011).

In 2016, she released the first film of her trilogy: “Impossible Figures and other stories II was an instant critical success, winning more than 20 awards, including the Grand Prize at the Stuttgart Animation Festival and the GLAS animation festival. Impossible Figures and other stories III, the second film in the trilogy, debuted at Cannes in 2018 and won several international awards.

Pajek’s most recent film, Impossible Figures and other stories I (2021), the final film (and first part) of the trilogy, is a co-production between Animoon and the National Film Board of Canada (NFB).

Olivier Cotte

Olivier Cotte began to direct animated films at the age of 14, using  mostly mixed frame by frame animation and live action.

He worked as a director, a computer artist and FX or Art director for animation shorts, commercials and 15 live action feature films by Philippe de Broca, Wim Wenders, Roman Polanski, Costa-Gavras, Leos Carax…

As an animation historian, he wrote more than twenty books, including a worldwide encyclopedia (« 100 ans de cinéma d’animation »), three monographs (on Walt Disney, Georges Schwizgebel and David Ehrlich), an encyclopedia on Animation Techniques, a study about 13 animated shorts awarded with an Oscar, and many collective works such as the monograph on Bordo Dovnikovic, Sexuality on Screen, Tim Burton’s Animation, Stop Motion Techniques, and so on.

 

He has taught History and Aesthetic of Animation, Digital Techniques, and « Mise en Scène » at the Gobelins School and Penninghen in France and in numerous countries.

He’s also a novelist, play writer and awarded graphic novels’s scriptwriter.

He received the ‘Award for Outstanding Achievement in Animation Theory’ at the Animafest Zagreb Festival in 2012

International Feature Film Competition

Deanna Morse

Deanna Morse is an artist, animator, educator, and a leader in international organizations supporting animators and independent film and video artists. 

She is currently President for ASIFA International, the oldest international organization of animators. Deanna has been invited to judge dozens of national and international festivals.

As a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, she annually judges the Oscars and the Student Academy Awards.

Her diverse animation and experimental film/video work is broadcast on Sesame Street, and is in permanent collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

She is cited in numerous books about experimental animation art, and women in animation. She was spotlighted as one of four “Women in the Limelight” in Giannalberto Bendazzi’s “Animation: A World History” in 2016.

A prolific animator, she has made a film each year since the early 1970’s. Her poetic short films and installations champion two very diverse approaches: hand-made under the camera frame-by-frame and/or embracing new technologies.  Her current work considers our relationships to friends and landscapes, exploring ideas of place, time, and seasonal change. An advocate for public art, and an Emeritus Professor of GVSU, Michigan, she now lives in Southern Oregon, USA, on a lane with goats, chickens, native plants, a cat, and family.

Les Mills

Les studied Fine Art at Cardiff Art College, Goldsmiths College University of London and at Rutgers University in the USA, completing a master’s degree in fine art & art history.

He lived in New York becoming involved with film & multimedia heavily influenced by the Fluxus group before returning to the UK. His teaching experience is extensive, initially teaching Art & Design but gradually becoming more interested in documentary filmmaking and animation which resulted in him teaching basic animation at Middlesex University, Film Production at Cardiff University

He was the Co-ordinator of “Chapter Independent Film Workshop” in Cardiff. His teaching experience culminated in him becoming Course Director of the Film School at the University of Wales, Newport. His first creative collaboration with Joanna Quinn was on her Graduation film “Girls Night Out” at Middlesex and since then the two have worked very closely together forming their company Beryl Productions International in 1988. Les wrote & produced the next 3 award winning Beryl films and produced “Wife of Bath” for which he won a Bafta and an Emmy.

In 2022 Les received the British Animation Awards Writers Award and was nominated for an Oscar for their most recent film Affairs of the Art.

Nuno Amorim

With a degree in architecture, he was art director at advertising agencies FCB and Publicis,later joining RTP Portuguese public television, where he started as a graphic designer, thendirector and responsible for the Graphic Department. At RTP, he wrote and directed severalanimated short films, documentary and cultural series, and was also responsible for a largepart of the graphics produced by RTP from 1977 to 1998. In 1991, he founded Animals, ananimation, motion graphics and documentaries production company, where he creates,produces and directs short films and animated series.

Piet Kroon

At 6’7” Piet Kroon stands as the world’s tallest internationally acclaimed animation writer and director working today, pushing the art of animation to new heights, without ever talking down to an audience.

 

He spearheaded the development and directed the animation of Warner Bros.’ irreverent cult comedyOsmosis Jones” (2001), about a cool white blood cell (Chris Rock) and a stuck up cold pill (David Hyde Pierce) that fight a nasty cold (Laurence Fishburne) inside Bill Murray’s rundown body.

 

Kroon developed, wrote and directed “HEINZ(2019), an animated comedy feature for young adults, based on a pleasantly deranged newspaper comic about a surly Amsterdam cat.

 

As story artist and story consultant Kroon worked on scores of animated features, ranging from Brad Bird’s fantastic “Iron Giant” (1997), “Shrek2” (2004) (contributing Pinocchio’s fetish for girlie-underwear) to the gorgeous idiosyncratic Academy Award winner Guillermo del Toro’s “Pinocchio” (2022). 

 

Kroon’s independent short films “DaDA” (1995) and T.R.A.N.S.I.T (1997) received widespread acclaim. T.R.A.N.S.I.T was short-listed for the Oscar ® and nominated for the BAFTA and Cartoon d’Or. It was elected Best Animated Short Film by The Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

International Student Films Competition

Daria Kashcheeva

Daria Kashcheeva studies animated film at FAMU in Prague. Her student films featured at many international festivals. Daria’s original “To Accept” won the Nespresso Talents 2017 film competition in Cannes. In “Daughter”, her Bachelor’s puppet animation, Daria experiments with camera motion and explores the topic of father-daughter relationship. The film had a premiere at Annecy Animation Film Festival and got Cristal for the best Student film and Young Jury award in Student film section. “Daughter” has got more than 100 awards including Sundance Animation Jury Award, the Student Academy Award in the category Animation (International Film Schools) and was nominated to the 92nd Oscar.

In her master degree film “Electra” (2023), which was premiered in Cannes and got the Best Short film award at the Toronto International Film Festival, she experiments with a combination of live action and animation techniques. Working with actors and human sized puppets, exploring a topic of domestic violence, sexuality and body perception, Daria aims to extend the limits of animation film genre.

Currently, Daria is developing her debut full-length project, “They/Them”, in which she continues to explore hybrid forms and genres.

Joana Toste

Born in May 1970. Graduated in Industrial Design and makes animation films.

Sergio Kotsovoulos

Sergio Ko is a film director with vast production experience on set and in post production. He started as a 3D animator and continued as director and set designer for various TV shows and TV commercials for the major production companies in Greece.

In 2021, Sergio wrote and directed the animated short film, "Echo". It has garnered, so far, more than 25 awards at International Film Festivals.

From 2014 to 2019 he co-founded EBGE and ERMIS award winning holistic design and film bureau, WITHIN in Athens, Greece.

Since 2018, Sergio is part of MAL-VI, an interdisciplinary design and communication agency based in Thessaloniki, Greece. From 2015 to 2016, he was a member of "synergastirion" a collective of creatives, curating multi-disciplinary installations with top Greek creatives, silk screen printing and interactive projection mapping games. 

Sergio is a founding member of ASIFA Hellas, and a member of ASIFA Hollywood.

National Competition

Coke Riobóo

Coke Riobóo is a director, musician and animator dedicated to the audiovisual and cinematographic world for more than 20 years.He became an independent producer in 2011.

Since 1997, he has been creating the music for short and feature film projects produced in Spain, Iran, Morocco and Mexico. Since 2001, he  works as an animator, collaborating on independent projects for theatre, documentaries and short films, as well as directing his own projects. He has been an animator in commercial projects for brands such as Movistar, Imagenio, Blackberry, Acciona, Lego Masters, BBVA, Ecoembes and more.

His short film “El Viaje de Said” won the Best Animated Short Film at the XXI Goya Awards in 2007 and to date has won almost fourty awards around the world. His second short film, “El Ruido del Mundo” obtained the prestigious Cacho Pallero Award at the Huesca Festival and has won more than thirty international awards. His third short film, “Made in Spainwas nominated for the Goya Award for Best Animated Short Film and won many more prestiged awards. “Mad in Xpain”, is his fourth short film made in 2020 has already accumulated more than 20 national and international awards.

Currently, Coke combines his commercial work with new personal projects and continues teaching, giving courses and workshops throughout the world.

Filipa Gaspar

Filipa is a filmmaker, illustrator and designer.

Born in Portugal, she moved abroad right after her Hotel Management degree to pursue her real passion: animation. After working on various countries, she finally gathered the funds to go study in Bristol (United Kingdom) where she got her BA in Animation from the University of the West of England with a 1st. She also got to work on “Flutter”, a short film by Adam Levy (Disney TD) which won multiple awards and was selected for the Oscars long list.

Studying and living in England really broadened her horizons in regards to creative expression and allowed her to experiment different mediums and styles that play a part in what she does today. She found a great diversity of people living in that city which tingled her documentary senses and pushed her towards the direction for her graduation film which she wrote, directed and produced, among other roles. This film is called “Home” and was made by recording over 5 hours of conversations in groups with her friends from all over the world that didn’t know each other but who lived in Bristol. The result was a 5-minute animated documentary made with the help of other students and this film went on to multiple festivals including CINANIMA!

Since then, she’s been working as a freelance illustrator and designer for studios and companies in the UK and Europe and she gets to work with awesome people all the time!

Her love for animated documentaries has only grown so far and she can’t wait to get her hands on the next one!

Wandson Lisboa

He lives in Porto, but his heart is also in Maranhão, where he was born. Wandson Lisboa has a degree in Social Communication, Publicity and Advertising from the Centro Universitário do Maranhão and a postgraduate degree in Graphic Design from UFMA. He came to Portugal in 2010 to take a master's degree at the University of Porto.

Recently, he starred in the RTP Play series IMLOVE, was a reporter at the European Song Festival, presented the RTP Stage at NOS Alive and was one of the contestants on  the programme TASKMASTER on RTP.

Today he's an inescapable figure in Portugal. His Instagram account was named one of the ten most creative Instagram accounts in the world by The Huffington Post. Since then, he has concluded projects in a wide variety of visual communication formats and worked for major brands such as Disney, NOS and IKEA. He was the face of a FNAC campaign and has made dozens of appearances on television programmes. And he pays beers.

Eliane Gordeeff

Eliane Gordeeff é animadora, professora, investigadora de animação ligada a Centros de Investigação em Portugal (CIEBA/FBAUL) e no Brasil (LAAD/UFRJ). É membro da ASIFA, da Society for Animation Studies e da Casa da Animação. Produziu, animou e dirigiu mais de 16 curtas-metragens de animação, algumas delas exibidas em festivais internacionais como CINANIMA, Nuevo Latinoamericano de Havana, Anima Mundi, Sicaf, Anima e Encounters Festival.

Doutora em Multimédia, com mais de 100 textos publicados (académicos e não académicos) e com mais de 12 000 leitores no Researchgate.org.
Autora do livro "Aesthetic Interferences: The Stop Motion Technique in the Animation Narrative" (2019). Correspondente de Portugal, Espanha e Brasil para o zippyframes.com.

Nik Phelps

Nik Phelps é um músico americano, conhecido pela sua versatilidade e habilidade em tocar instrumentos de sopro, particularmente saxofone e clarinete. Desenvolveu uma paixão pela música desde cedo, levando-o a estudar na prestigiada Berklee College of Music em Boston. 

Phelps fez contribuições significativas para o mundo do cinema, especialmente na animação, onde o seu som distinto enriqueceu inúmeros filmes e projetos. Colaborou com artistas e bandas aclamadas como Tom Waits e Frank Zappa, e é um membro-chave da Club Foot Orchestra, conhecida pelas suas inovadoras bandas sonoras ao vivo para filmes mudos e animações. Como compositor e arranjador respeitado, Phelps continua a ser uma figura importante na interseção da música e do cinema, deixando um impacto duradouro no público mundial.

Sahra Kunz

Sahra Kunz é licenciada em Artes Plásticas - Pintura - pela Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade do Porto (1997). Obteve o grau de Mestre em Som e Imagem pela Universidade Católica Portuguesa (2001).
É doutorada em Desenho pela na Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do País Basco (Bilbao - 2011).
Desde 1998 é docente no curso de Som e Imagem da Universidade Católica Portuguesa, lecionando de entre outras, as disciplinas de Ferramentas de Desenho, Desenho para Pré-Produção, História da Animação, Teoria da Animação, Atelier de Animação, Produção de Projeto Final de Animação e Dissertação.

Ana Oliveira

Nascida em Lisboa, em 1981. Licenciatura em Escultura pela Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade de Lisboa. Depois de uma pequena formação em stop motion em 2002, trabalhou em cerca de 5 curtas-metragens onde aplicou essa mesma técnica e na longa metragem de Nuno Beato, “Os Demónios do Meu Avô”, entre outros projetos como séries infantis ou publicidade.
Ocasionalmente, trabalha ainda como ilustradora e regressou à escultura de pequeno formato.

Davide Freitas

É Produtor Executivo na Animais – Animação, Vídeo e Publicidade, Lda. Estudou Economia na Faculdade de Economia da Universidade do Porto (UP) e Gestão Cultural pela Associação Portuguesa de Gestão Cultural / UP. Foi colaborador da Curtas Metragens CRL entre 2003 e 2017, desempenhando diversas funções desde a programação e coordenação de produção do projeto ANIMAR (2005-2017) passando pela produção, montagem e serviço educativo das exposições da Solar – Galeria de Arte Cinemática (2003-2017), com colaborações pontuais na produção do Curtas Vila do Conde – Festival Internacional de Cinema (2003-2016), à distribuição e venda de curtas-metragens na Agência da Curta Metragem (2003-2011). Sócio-fundador da Casa da Animação – Associação Cultural da qual foi membro da direção entre 1999 e 2001, mantendo colaboração pontual nas atividades da associação. Trabalhou ainda como produtor executivo no Filmógrafo – Estúdio de Cinema de Animação do Porto (1997-2002).

Oscar de Santillana

De origem espanhola-mexicana, Oscar de Santillana é um animador que dedicou a sua vida profissional ao ensino, tendo sido professor de diferentes disciplinas de animação durante muitos anos. Responsável por vários cursos de especialização, foi diretor da Ars Animation School de Madrid durante 15 anos.
Durante 10 anos, fez parte de um grupo restrito do projeto europeu de formação de animadores da Cartoon Media "Training for Trainers", destinado aos diretores das escolas de animação mais importantes da Europa.
Orientador de inúmeras palestras, especialmente em universidades mexicanas.
Atualmente, trabalha como consultor online e mentor de estudantes de animação em todo o mundo. É um grande amante da animação e dos festivais e um promotor da animação nas redes sociais onde se destaca pelo seu grande trabalho na divulgação e promoção do trabalho de muitos artistas de todo o mundo.

Carlos Fernandes

CARLOS FERNANDES nasceu em Lisboa ainda no tempo da TV a preto e branco. Após ter
rabiscado tudo o que havia em casa (desde livros de culinária, até uma edição de luxo dos
Lusíadas), decidiu manter-se no mundos das artes e por entre cursos e trabalhos vários,
conseguiu introduzir-se no mundo da animação, em 99.
Desde então colaborou com diversos estúdios da área em diversas produções, nomeadamente
séries, curtas, videoclips e videojogos online, onde vestiu a pele de artista conceitual,
storyboarder e animador. Teve ocasião também, de experienciar a função de realizador numa
série de animação para TV e igualmente, como realizador de uma curta-metragem de imagem
real. Foi sócio fundador de um estúdio de animação, de curta duração, mas agradáveis
memórias. Conseguiu ainda algum relevo como formador, mas achou que os seus talentos
seriam melhor aproveitados a montante do ensino.
Atualmente para além de se manter na animação, idealiza storyboards de ficção para TV,
desenvolve a sua primeira novela gráfica, dedica-se à pintura e ao coleccionismo.

Cristiano Ribeiro

Daniel Cristiano Pereira Ribeiro, nascido a 8 de fevereiro de 1995 e natural da freguesia de Miragaia – Porto.
Licenciado em Administração e Gestão Desportiva, pela Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa no ano de 2016.
Iniciou a sua atividade profissional no ano de 2018, na Cooperativa Nascente em Espinho, onde continua até aos dias atuais a desempenhar funções de técnico administrativo e financeiro entre outras funções de gestão.
Tem um grande interesse por cinema, desporto e cultura no seu geral.

Leonor Faria Henriques

Leonor Faria Henriques é animadora e ilustradora.

Fez a licenciatura e o mestrado em Animação na Escola nas Artes da Universidade Católica, onde realizou 3 curtas metragens de animação: Nada se Perde (2020), Rua do Caneiro (2022) e A Minha Casa tem Muitas Janelas (2023). Este último projeto serve como o arranque de uma ideia que está em desenvolvimento para uma série de animação para crianças que aborda a solidão.

Entretanto, fez parte da equipa que fundou o coletivo Piquenique na Lua, do qual ainda faz parte. No coletivo, organizou eventos como o ANIMAY.TION e workshops para crianças em conjunto com o serviço educativo do CINANIMA e realizou pequenas oficinas com o IndieJúnior e o grupo Espalhafitas. Também trabalhou como animadora e pintora em vários projetos de animação, tais como videoclips, uma série, curtas-metragens e uma longa-metragem.

Atualmente, continua a trabalhar como animadora, pintora e formadora de animação em diferentes projetos. Neste momento, está a desenvolver duas ideias de projetos dedicados às crianças e trabalha como ilustradora freelancer.

CINANIMA Schools

Belmiro Carvalho

Belmiro António de Oliveira Carvalho nasceu em agosto de 1968. Licenciou-se em Ensino de
Educação Visual na Escola Superior de Educação do Porto e fez mais tarde uma Pós-Graduação
em Design do Produto Industrial, Comunicação Visual na Escola Superior de Arte e Design do
Porto.
Começou a ver cinema de animação desde muito cedo, no CINANIMA, e de 1993 a 2004 foi
membro da sua Comissão Organizadora; coordenador da Oficina de Cinema de Animação
(atelier permanente); membro da direção da Cartoon Portugal – Associação Portuguesa do
Filme Animado de 1997 a 2000; e membro da Direção da Cooperativa de Atividades Culturais –
Nascente, Espinho.
Animador e realizador de cinema de animação, participou na execução e realização de vários
genéricos para o CINANIMA.
Foi jurado em vários festivais, nomeadamente no Festival de Documentário e Curtas
Metragens de Ficção, Porto 2001; no FEST 2003; no festival de Avanca em 2005 e 2007.
Como formador, dinamizou e realizou vários cursos e oficinas no âmbito do cinema de
animação, em diversas associações, festivais, escolas e associações. Como designer gráfico,
realizou inúmeros trabalhos para Instituições, escolas e empresas privadas. Como artista
plástico realizou várias exposições coletivas de pintura e fotografia nas cidades de Espinho, Vila
Nova de Gaia e Ovar.
Exerce funções como docente no Agrupamento de Escolas de Esmoriz, sendo Diretor de Curso
Profissional Técnico Multimédia lecionando a disciplina de Design, Comunicação e Audiovisuais
e as disciplinas de Educação Visual e Educação Tecnológica ao 2º ciclo.

Lurdes Natário

Susana Ferreira

Professora de 1.o ciclo do Ensino Básico desde 2000.
Há quase 20 anos a lecionar no concelho de Espinho, a visitar as exposições e a assistir aos
programas educativos do CINANIMA, com os seus alunos.
Participante em diversos projetos educativos e workshops, relacionados com o cinema de
animação, nomeadamente no projeto Crianças Prime1ro, desenvolvido com uma turma de 2.o
ano, da Escola Básica de Anta, no ano de 2017, com o filme “A Arte dos Violinos”.
Já este ano, tornou a fazer parceria com o mesmo projeto, numa turma de 3.o ano, da Escola
Básica Integrada Sá Couto, criando o filme “A Menina do Mar e o Menino da Terra”.
