Perspectives on Portuguese Animation is an initiative of CINANIMA – International Animated Film Festival of Espinho, originally conceived and developed in 2021 by the then Artistic Director of CINANIMA, professor and award-winning animation director Pedro Serrazina.
Since then, CINANIMA has organised new editions of the symposium annually, with the aim of also producing scientific publications arising from the initiative.
The first publication, dedicated to the directors David Doutel and Vasco Sá (2023), was curated and edited by Pedro Serrazina, and included analyses by Pedro Serrazina himself, as well as by the researchers Mihaela Mihailova, Magda Cordas, Luísa Veloso and Paulo Viveiros.
The second volume (2023), edited by Cátia Peres, highlights the work of the directing duo Alexandra Ramires and Laura Gonçalves, with contributions by Cátia Peres, Gabriela Sá and Marina Estela Graça.
The Pedagogical Workbook, authored by professor Mário Gandra and filmmaker LoTA Gandra, was also published in the same year (2023), and is aimed at the secondary school community.
The 3rd edition of the symposium (2023), held as part of the 47th CINANIMA Festival, was curated by Cátia Peres and focused on the feature films Nayola, by José Miguel Ribeiro, and My Grandfather’s Demons by Nuno Beato, featuring contributions by Cátia Peres, Cynthia Levitan, Sandra Ramos, João Apolinário, Inês Rebanda Coelho and Risa Cohen.
The 4th edition (2024), integrated into the 48th CINANIMA Festival and curated by Sahra Kunz, is dedicated to the work of Regina Pessoa, with analyses by Laura Castro, Patrícia Oliveira-Silva and Pedro Serrazina.
The publications relating to these last two editions are released in 2026.
With the support of ICA – Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual, the four bilingual scientific publications are intended for both national and international academic communities, and are available in a limited physical edition as well as through universal digital access via the CINANIMA website. Given the limited print run, CINANIMA prioritises the digital dissemination of these publications, reinforcing open access to knowledge by providing free downloads of the works.
The presentation of the last two publications takes place from May 2026 onwards at festivals, conferences, higher education institutions and other cultural and educational organisations, aimed at the general public and featuring the presence of curators, editors, authors and researchers.
