Time has passed, but the feeling that I had died in Irpin has never left me. The film reconstructs this true story of survival through a personal and subjective perspective.

The Beautiful Mystery of Where Memories Come From

Curated by Malcolm Turner - MIAF, Australia

When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school
It’s a wonder I can think at all
And though my lack of education hasn’t hurt me none
I can read the writing on the wall

“Kodachrome” Paul Simon (1973)

Ah, high school. I recall so little, I remember so much.

Where do memories come from? How do we make them, shape and store them, recall them, and control them?

“My car is white” is more a piece of data than a memory. “The first car I ever owned was white” is likely to be a gateway to an entire chapter of one’s life story. It sure as hell was for me!

Carl Sagan famously said that we are all made of star stuff. And he’s right but that’s only a tiny, tiny part of the story – all he’s doing there is explaining all of us. A ‘one size fits all’ explanation for the myriad shapes, colours and sizes of that great big ‘us’. But I’m not ‘us’, I’m just me. And the same thing applies to you.

Words, pictures and binary code can be used to store and communicate data, information and knowledge. But for a memory to be made and saved it needs a ‘me’ or a ‘you’ and there’s an infinite mystery in the way that all comes together. That boundless capacity of the human mind to mould the specific data of a lived experience into the infinite, expansive mystery of a saved memory is one of humankind’s greatest party tricks.

Using the infinite pliability of animation is our best chance of reverse engineering that process to pass on not so much the detail of an experience but the purest essence and feel of a memory. And so, whether it is Jody Cleaver’s abstracted visualisation of one woman’s life spent bringing classical music to the streets, Barry Purves recalling the light and dark of Tchaikovsky’s inner and outer lives, or Valerie Barnhart’s valiant attempts to force into existence the memory of a little life that should have been allowed to make its own, each of these films does a superb job of precisely this.

Underpinning them is a second, below-the-radar thread that meanders through my own life time of quite specific memories harvested from decades of being able to experience close-up the most expressive artform there is…. I hope you enjoy this selection of writings on the wall.

Comedy & Young Audiences

Curated by École Émile Cohl, Lion, France

Founded in 1984 in Lyon, France by Philippe Rivière, École Émile Cohl has always aimed to train complete artists, combining strong drawing skills with modern media. From the beginning, comics and animation have been at the heart of its programs. For 40 years, generations of teachers have encouraged students to build their own artistic style on a solid foundation of drawing.

The school keeps evolving with new technologies and digital tools, preparing young artists for the future of illustration, animation, and video games. Many alumni are now leading major projects around the world—for example, Pierre Perifel directed The Bad Guys for DreamWorks, among other box office successes.

In their final year, students each create an animated short film on their own. They take care of every step, from the first sketches to the finished movie. For the soundtrack, they work with students from music schools, creating real artistic collaborations.

More than just technical work, each project reflects a personal artistic vision. Students are encouraged to bring originality, style, and emotion into their films.

For the school’s 40th anniversary and Cinanima’s 50th, we are proud to share a selection of short films that shows the diversity and creativity of École Émile Cohl.
